Papunya Tjupi Arts Centre
Spent the most beautiful two days in the remote community of Garramilla / Papunya, working on an exciting little project for Laundry Gallery - a wonderful gallery inside an old laundromat in Darwin.
Papunya is about 240kms northwest of Mparntwe / Alice Springs, and is considered the birthplace of the Western Desert Art Movement. There’s about 400 people who live here. It’s also where the famous Warumpi band began in the 1980s.
There are countless wonderful artists who work from the art centre but I was here to photograph Doris Bush.
Doris is in her 80s and she paints her memories, stories and dreams from throughout her life. Many of her paintings are about Papa Tjukurrpa, which are dingo dreaming stories.
Here’s a little snippet from my time there. Can’t wait to share all the film photos we made and a little more of Doris’ marvellous work.
