The Magic of Mutawintji

A place of immense natural, cultural and historical significance, Mutawintji National Park has once again become a vital meeting place for the traditional owners, who famously fought the government for reclamation of their rights over this country. Mutawintji Cultural festival is an annual event that brings dance groups from around the nation to the park to celebrate connection to country and culture. I was incredibly lucky to be able to photograph and write the story of this wonderful event for Australian Geographic the organisers and attendees who shared their stories about what this place means to them. This land has been hard-fought for, for many decades, and today is a political landmark and living archive of Aboriginal resistance. Sharing in this celebration was truly one of the most incredible experiences I’ve lived to date and it’s really hard to give words to the magic that is Mutawintji, but I’ve tried my best in the November/ December print issue of Aus Geo. I like to think it’s worth a read and even more importantly, Mutawintji itself is definitely worth a visit.
